Simms Windstopper ‘Foldover’ Mitt

Posted by on November 8th, 2012 in Equipment, Essential Gear, Reviews

For coldweather fishing, I don’t think there is a better, more versatile glove on the market than the Simms Foldover mitt. Lightweight, DWR-finish soft-shell with a Windstopper® lining means these mitts are warm without unnecessary bulk. You can fold the mitt back and tuck it under the cuff when you need finger dexterity, and there is even a built-in pocket for heater packs – a smart little detail. These babies are absolutely essential for steelhead chasing, and the other thing I love about them is that they are versatile enough to use for lots of other coldweather pursuits. Available right now … Continue reading

Sun Protection

Nothing kills a great day of fishing like getting cooked until you feel like an overdone ham halfway through the day. What’s particularly silly about letting this happen is that it’s entirely avoidable with a little preparation and the right gear. Continue reading

Scott “A4″ Fly Rod

Posted by on July 2nd, 2012 in Equipment, Essential Gear, Reviews

The Scott A4 has quickly become a favorite for us at HCF.  If you are looking for a well-built rod that is about as versatile as you can get, the A4 might just be the rod for you. The A4 is a faster rod with a mid-to-tip flex, which I have found ideal for fishing our area, whether its out of a boat or from the shore.  We feel this rod is so versatile that we decided to outfit all of our guides solely with A4 rods this season. Not only is it a great rod for trout fishing, it … Continue reading

Fishing trip report 3/29/12 Section: Wilson- South Park (Snake River) Bugs: Midges and a few BWO’s Weather: Cloudy,  moderate snowfall, and winds 10-15   Had a fun day on the water with Maggie Jordan and her friend Eric Gardinio.  We only saw a few fish rise all day but the ones that were rising were attacking bugs.  With the lack of action up top we spent the day fishing nymphs and streamers.  The streamer bite was the most productive and had plenty of chasers throughout the day.  Both black and olive streamers with some weight seemed to be the ticket. Nymping produced a … Continue reading
