Today is opening day for Wyoming’s unique “Fly Only” water – Flat Creek on the National Wildlife Refuge, just north of Jackson. If you’ve never fished Flat Creek, it’s certainly one of our finest fishing experiences in the area. If you want a challenge, or if you’ve always thought of cutthroat as “easy,” then Flat Creek might just change your mind. The above map is intended only as an overview of the Jackson Hole region and lacks the detail required for absolute accuracy. It is properly scaled, but may not be entirely accurate regarding the relationship between rivers and roads, for example. Introduction Surprisingly little has been written about fly fishing in the Jackson Hole region and even less of it is available on the web. The Snake River

The Snake River Open Season: Trout fishing on the Snake from Jackson dam to Palisades reservoir is legal year-round, though it is strict catch-and-release for all cutthroat trout between Nov. 1st and March 31st. Whitefish season runs year round except the month of March. Runoff season typically runs from mid-May through mid-July during which time the river is unfishable. Open Season: August 1 – October 31 Best Time of Year to Fish: This section will fish consistently well through the entire season. Best Time of Day to Fish: The first part of the season can fish from sun-up to sun-down but as Fall comes on with its cooler temperatures it becomes much more of a mid-day fishery. Gros Ventre River Open Season: April 1 – October 31. Runoff season typically runs from early to mid-May through late-June/early-July during which time the river is unfishable. Best Time of Year to Fish: From the end of run-off through August. Longer if there are sufficient amounts of water. Best Time of Day to Fish: As with most cutthroat fishing, middle of the day is best, excepting early or late hatches. Best Time of Year to Fish: End of run-off through September. During the Salmon Fly hatch Best Time of Day to Fish: Midday Species: Snake River Fine-spotted Cutthroat Trout Access: Lots of easy access (more than can be shown on the map) along Route 189/191.
